“I had all these incredible residences that I owned that I just don’t get to visit anymore,” says Genovese, chairman of BG Capital Group Limited, which in 2013 came out with the BG Signature Luxury Retreat Collection. “And having spent some time with Richard Branson, he sort of hit me over the head and said, ‘Well, why don’t you do what I do?’ And that’s how BG Signature came about.”

It works perfectly for Genovese, who just likes to show people a good time. An adventure enthusiast himself who finds his rush exploring different corners of the world (and anywhere that happens to have a polo field), the entrepreneur and business mogul has established his ideal hobby in BG Signature Collection.

“I really enjoy creating incredible experiences of holidays for people,” says Genovese, who’s talking from the BG Signature flagship location, an equestrian resort in Ocala, Fla. This particular property is a real-life fantasy for any active vacationer, located adjacent to the Florida Horse Park and backing onto the world-famous Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, a 177-kilometre-long trail that connects one side of the state to the other.

BG Capital Group announces the latest addition to his luxury yacht division with the launch of M/Y BG CHARADE

Adding to a global portfolio of BG Signature experiences and concierge travel offerings, BG Capital Group Chairman Bobby Genovese has announced the latest addition to his luxury yacht division with the launch of M/Y BG CHARADE, a classic 154-foot Feadship following a complete interior and exterior refit.

The new fully customized motor yacht boasts a modern, stylish interior with six spacious staterooms accommodating 12 guests for overnight trips. Among the changes is a more streamlined, ergonomic layout throughout, a new VIP suite on the main deck as a sixth stateroom, a new large wine display in the salon, state-of-the-art electronics and a spectacular outdoor aft deck theatre suited for al fresco entertaining and lounging.

“BG CHARADE was world renown when built in 1990 as the first Feadship to have a wheel-less wheelhouse,” said Genovese who fell in love with the boat when owned by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen.

“Paul took her up the Amazon River and around the world twice, where she enjoyed a global roster of guests who undoubtedly shared my fascination and awe. She’s an amazing and storied work of art with a pedigree as unique as her lines.” And so, when the opportunity to purchase CHARADE decades later from then-owner British entrepreneur Joe Lewis, Genovese knew that life had come full circle and the yacht he had admired so was to be his destiny.

Bobby Genovese made his fortune in the same way he has approached yachting: acquiring companies and yachts in rapid succession. Here, he shares his ventures into the business of fun with Marilyn Mower.

“WHO HAS MORE FUN THAN US?” If you watch Bobby Genovese race his kids up a 55-foot natural granite rock climbing wall at his summer house in Canada, charge along on a polo pony, blast out of his Lake Rosseau boathouse in one of his vintage speedboats or Jet Ski around one of his charter yachts, you quickly understand the question is rhetorical. His face has two speeds: grin and bigger grin.

I first heard about Genovese in connection with a 154-foot Feadship he’s refitting, Charade, thinking it might be a good story for Boat International Media’s Refit annual. Since Charade was in full “Frankenboat” stage at Derecktor shipyard, his PA suggested meeting on one of his other boats in Miami Beach or at his polo and equestrian club in Vero Beach, Florida. Serial boat owners, I’ve known aplenty; polo ponies added a new twist.

Genovese is a Canadian entrepreneur with an improbable success story that sounds like a TV script; oh wait, his life was bundled into a script, eight episodes to be exact of a program called “Bobby G: Adventure Capitalist” that aired in 2008 and followed him and his CEO Marco Markin as they bought, built and sold companies.

Genovese is chairman of BG Capital Group and BG Capital Management Corp., both based in Barbados, BG Capital Investment Trust and now BG Signature Resorts.

Tall, tan and fit-looking under a shock of sandy hair, his style is friendly, folksy, self-effacing and yet totally confident and prepared for anything. He has a knack for establishing working assets, and the harder they work the better. We were sitting on one of them, a Lazzara 78 LSX sport yacht that chartered 170 days last year in Florida and The Bahamas. Our backdrop was another one of his yachts in the BG Signature Luxury Yacht Collection, a Sunseeker Predator 75 he’d added to the portfolio in December 2014.
